Supporting Recent Afghan Arrivals in LA:

Recent world events have led to conversations here at Pacific Unitarian about how to help the Afghan families who are migrating to Southern California.  At a meeting of about 20 people in our Library in November we dedicated ourselves to stepping up to make a difference in what is unwinding into a National disaster a world away.  At that meeting, initiated by Barbara Marriot, a number of possibilities for stepping up to help have emerged.  That list has for practical purposes have whittled down to two ways to help.

Miry’s List: The first of those is “Miry’s list, or “miryslist.org” 

Miry’s List, which has been featured in the LA Times, NPR, and CNN as a worthy charity, describes itself as a movement of neighbors & friends dedicated to welcoming new arrival refugee families into our community through inspired crowdsourcing. This movement was initiated one woman, Miry Whitehill, who was looking for a single item to help one migrant family in 2016. It has since evolved into an organization that assists newly arrived individual Afghan families by helping them acquire the basics needed to establish their new lives here. This is accomplished by giving people who want to help the opportunity to donate money or the opportunity to purchase goods through Target. Miryslist.org has partnered with Target to create a gift registry specific to each Afghan family’s needs. There is a link on  miryslist.org to the Target registry where you will see a picture of the family, read their story, and review a list of the items that they need. Items or gift cards can be purchased from that list and Target will mail them directly to the family without shipping costs.
