Saving, No Managing the World: A Recipe

Contrary to Marvel Comics and Paramount Pictures, the world will not be saved by Superman or the latest brave action hero.  In fact, contrary to many religious traditions the world doesn’t need saving at all.  What the world really needs is for humans to realize that what it needs is to be carefully and inspiringly managed.  Today as a community spiritually committed to its own little acts of heroism and world transformation we will suspend our cynicism, perhaps even reality for a moment, to hear a report of just how the world was “saved.”
Reverend Steve Wilson
Memories of Mother

Reverend Furrer preaching on memories of his mother, with notes on the Greek myths of Demeter and Persephone, poet Kahlil Gibran, psychoanalytic theory, and more…

Enjoy The View!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR TREASURER

On Sunday, April 30, 2017, we held a Town Hall meeting to discuss the status of and predictions for the remainder of our current fiscal year (ending June 30th) Operating Budget.  I also gave a power point presentation, and distributed paper copies of three proposed operating budgets for FYE18 (a "dream" budget, a more realistic budget, and what I might refer to as an "austere" budget).  You can view both the power point presentation and the budget handout on the PUC website members' page, under $$financials$$, or ask Gaby and she will print you out a paper copy.

First and foremost, I want to thank all the people who came to the meeting and asked questions and gave suggestions about how we can better raise and spend our money.    Second, I want to thank Randy Ripley, Judy Shaffer and Ben Cowan for all their help in serving on the Finance Committee.  Third, I want to give a shout out and thank you to Tara Unvergazt, Lora Childers, Jean Tordella and John Einhorn for all their hard work and dedication serving on the Pledge Drive Committee.  Fourth, I want to thank all the people who made pledges, increased their pledges, or made additional pledges, as well as the anonymous people who put up the matching funds   As a result of everyone's effort, by the middle of the afternoon, we reached our Pledge Drive goal!!!

Throughout this week and part of next, I will be working with the finance committee to revise the FYE18 Operations budget to incorporate the additional pledges and your suggestions.  Please, take a good look at each line item in the budget and let me or anyone on the finance committee know your ideas for how we can raise more money (revenue side), save more money (expense side) or better allocate the money we have (priorities).   For example:  Are you willing/able to fill in for any of our staff during their vacation time or maternity time, thereby saving some costs that would otherwise be spent on a temporary employee?  Do you have a particular skill set that you can volunteer your time doing (e.g. website design, computers, facility maintenance, advertising, facility coordination and rental, teaching, custodial, etc.), thereby freeing up some of that allocated funding for other things?  Are you willing to give of your time developing or resurrecting a team or committee that can generate or save revenue, such as Stewardship, Finance, Auction, Little Rocks, Black & White Party, Pledge Drive, etc.?  Let us know!!!   Leave a message with Gaby or send an email to [email protected].   The deadline for suggestions is May 10th, as the final draft budget needs to be published no later than May 21st in the Notice of Annual Congregational Meeting.  It will be voted upon on June 4th.
  Thanks so much!
  ~Trish

Approval of Called Minister Candidate Reverend Steven Wilson

A congregational meeting, as called for in the PUC bylaws, will be held after service on Sunday, May 7th, 2017 at 12:15pm, in Henriksen Hall, for the following purposes:

  • Approve Reverend Steven Wilson as the next full-time called minister for PUC

In their effort to ensure broad representation of the current membership of PUC in the important business of the congregation, the Trustees approve both absentee and email voting for the May 7th meeting. Current members must be 18 or over, have signed the membership book, and have a current contribution of record (pledge or waiver), in order to vote.

Since the Board of Trustees has allowed for absentee ballots and email voting, and PUC’s bylaws require a two week notice, no amendments to the ballot will be allowed. For absentee ballots, to protect your confidentiality, place your ballot in a plain sealed envelope inside another sealed envelope and sign your name on the outside envelope only. If voting via email, please recognize that the anonymity of your vote cannot be assured. Absentee ballots, in written or email form, must be received by the PUC office by Sunday, May 7th at 12:00pm noon for your vote to count.

Please contact any member of the Board or the Ministerial Search Committee if you have any questions.  The Ministerial Search Committee can be reached via email at [email protected]

This is a very important step for the future of PUC, and your vote is required.  Rev. Steve Wilson will be in the pulpit on both Sunday April 30th and Sunday May 7th.  Please join us after service on Sunday, May 7th or get your absentee ballot (included on next page) in prior to noon of that date.

If you are unable to attend the meeting on May 7th, please submit your Absentee Ballott via email or to Gaby in the office.

Something Not Everyone Knows

Only a fraction of the fun of the PUC auction is found at the event itself. The real enjoyment is in all the fellowship we get to share throughout the year. "How?" you wonder. Many of the PUC auction items are meals and other gatherings that you enjoy with a group. It’s a really fun way to get to spend time with members and friends of PUC who you might never have had a chance to meet. Honestly, it’s as enjoyable to be the host as it is to attend these events. Don’t miss this chance to connect with your community. The list of offerings will be out in about two weeks.

"I love discovering what people have come up with each year to entertain us and provide experiences that bring us together.  It's always pleasant to
get to know members I may not otherwise spend time with."

Lee Ann Hart

"I love feeding frenzies...and our auctions are often like that.  The challenge to win the parking space or the many bids to name a sermon topic.  And
I am alway so proud of our PUC family that steps up and helps us earn the money we need to continue to do good things up on this hill."

Gary Hart
