Dinners With UUs
Our kick-off dinner in the garden at Rachel Bruhnke’s was a grand success. Seventeen PUCers - long time as well as new members - joined Rachel’s family for the pot luck dinner. A highlight was enjoying fresh bananas from her tree dipped in chocolate. Watch for news of our next dinner scheduled for October. And thank you Rachel!

Girl Scout Gold Award, “Path of Enlightenment” at PUC

This summer, Marina Kissner who is in YRUU, is working on her Girl Scout Gold Award at PUC. Marina has been a Girl Scout since the first grade and will be a senior at South High School in Torrance. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that Girl Scout Ambassadors can earn and consists of a minimum 80-hour project that helps a community.
For Marina’s project, she is creating a “Path of Enlightenment” along the hiking trail at PUC. Along the trail, she is labeling the religious figures and wildlife. She is creating a brochure and making an app available for those who hike the trail. She is creating a video that will link to the PUC website for those unable to walk it so they can enjoy the trail virtually.
Marina’s goal is to help people learn about different religions and wildlife as they walk the trail. She is hopeful that after acquiring the knowledge, people will realize that all religions are very similar and that the earth needs to be taken care of. Marina will present to the PUC congregation when her project is complete.

New Documentary of UU Minister Airing on PBS
Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War a new documentary directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky, will premiere on PBS, on Sept 20, at 9 PM. The film tells the story of Martha and Waitstill Sharp, a UU minister and social worker wife, two of UUSC's founders. During the 1930s and into World War II, at the request of the UUA, the Sharps undertook vital missions in Nazi-occupied Europe to rescue Jews, dissidents, and refugee children at great personal risk. Islamophobia and the worldwide refugee crisis are modern day parallels to the bigotry the Sharps fought against. UUSC stands against hate speech and fear mongering and calls on our supporters to join us in taking action to advance justice and tolerance. You can find more info on the UUA website.

BUDDHIST MEDITATION GROUP meets at PUC Library Tuesday evenings, 7:30-9:00 pm.
Learn meditation and the purpose of meditation in the Buddhist wisdom tradition. Developing our love and compassion for all beings, we can find joy and meaning in life. Newcomers welcome anytime, no experience required. Just bring an open mind and a kind heart - we can even help you find those! While meditation instruction is free, donations ($10-$20) to support our activity are gratefully accepted.
Dan Dempster has been authorized by Khenpo Migmar Tseten (Buddhist chaplain at Harvard University and Director of the Sakya Institute for Buddhist Study, Cambridge) and is a certified meditation instructor.
