Introducing A New member of PUC: Judi Carter
I am a new member at PUC and am looking forward to getting to know everyone. I moved to Los Angeles a year ago from Atlanta, Georgia, to be near my son and daughter and their children. I have five grandchildren 8 years old and under. I did not want to miss these special years of having them young enough to still sit in my lap and hug. I bought a house in Torrance, halfway between the homes of my two children. My daughter and her family went with me to the PUC retreat in the fall.
I was a long-time member of the Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Atlanta. The congregation was of a similar size to PUC. I served in several capacities in leadership there. I was on the Board, Membership Chair, Greeter, and a co-leader of our “Chalice Group”, a small group that met for over 10 years. I hope to see some of these small groups form at PUC. We had several groups based on geography, a men’s group, a group for young couples with children, etc.
I am single, a former high school and college biology teacher, a reader, a traveler, and a news junkie. I still tutor students via Facetime. I like to cook, eat out, go to plays and concerts, hike, and observe nature whenever I can.

Get Involved in the 4 Ministerial Search Committee Activities Coming Up in September and October!
During the coming months, there will be many opportunities to share what is important to you in our new minister and learn what is important to others. Please participate in as many of the upcoming activities as you can!
Attend a Cottage Party
Join a cottage party to share what is important to you as we begin the ministerial search. Dates include Sun, Sept 11 and 18 from 12:00pm-1:30pm after service at PUC. Three evening cottage parties are scheduled for Tues, Sept 13 and 20 from 7:00pm-8:30pm at homes within a mile from PUC and a new one was just added on Thurs, Sept 22 from 7:00pm-8:30pm in Torrance within 4 miles of PUC. To sign-up for a cottage party, please email Darcy Carroll at MSC@pacificunitarian.org or call Darcy at (310) 922-4866. A sign-up table is also available on Sunday, Sept 11 on the patio.
Complete the Survey
The survey will launch the week of September 12 and will provide an opportunity for you to share your thoughts regarding your church membership and involvement, spiritual and theological beliefs, worship preferences, church goals and growth, and professional ministry. Please make time to complete it!
Attend the Sat, October 8th Beyond Categorical Thinking Workshop
In finding the person who would be the best match for our minister, we could potentially overlook or even let biases keep us from knowing that a particular person would be the best match for us. Our congregation will host the highly recommended Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop on Sat, October 8th, 9:00am-12:00pm at PUC. Trainers will facilitate a 3-hour conversation where we will examine how we can avoid letting prejudice become a part of our search process. This is yet another way for us to put our faith into lived experience and improve the odds that regardless of identity, we will find the minister who is the best match for us and will serve us well.
This opportunity allows the entire congregation fuller participation in the search process. It will allow us to explore our hopes and concerns for a new minister, learn more about the search process, and see how our own history (both personal and congregational) might interfere with our efforts in this search. Everyone is encouraged to attend (child care provided if requested) this UU led workshop to help us hone the search for the best minister to meet the needs of PUC.
Attend the Sun, October 16th Town Hall Meeting
At the Town Hall meeting after church on Sun, Oct 16th, the survey results will be shared along with the next steps in the ministerial search process.
Please visit the Ministerial Search Committee Corner on PUC’s Bulletin Board for up-to-date information. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the committee at msc@pacificunitarian.org.

PineCon – The game gathering in the mountains is for you.
PineCon is the brainchild of 3 Southern California UUs who love deBenneville and love playing tabletop games. Adam, Chris, and Griffin thought - why not combine two of our favorite things? And thus PineCon was born.

Pricing ranges $85 - $155 and includes all meals for the weekend, 5 organized game slots, lodging in shared bunkrooms, Archery, and the Hot Tub. In addition to our facilitated games, we'll also be using the lodge for "open gaming" where you can share your favorite game with everyone.

Worship Leaders Needed
If you've ever considered helping lead Sunday worship, step right up! PUC needs volunteers to serve as celebrants (worship leaders) starting in October. It's a great way to serve and taking part in making our services more inclusive and friendly. If you are interested, please contact Rev. Stephen so he can put you on the list for a training he plans to conduct this fall. There will be a few changes in the order of service, so this will help familiarize celebrants with new protocols. If you have questions, please contact Stephen or a Worship Committee member: Vivien Hao, Dale Osborne or Melissa Tyrrel.

Playing in the Sage…
“Wherever we travel to, the wonderful people we meet become our family.”
----Lailah Gifty Akita, Think Great: Be Great!
Sometimes we don’t even have to go anywhere to find new members of our Pacific Sage Preschool Family. We are continuing to grow as new children and families find their way to our garden gate. Everyone agrees that this is a wonderful place for a child to be. (It’s also a wonderful place for adults as well.)
As enrollment has grown, we have added yet another new “collaborator” to play with us. I am happy to introduce Ms. Milena Cho. She started on September 1st. Ms. Milena has worked with more traditional play-based programs in the south bay but says our Reggio Philosophy, though new to her “…feels like home. It honors the child’s innate ability to explore, and be creative.”
We say “Welcome Home!”
Warmly,
Sylvia
Director
Pacific Sage Preschool
