July 24th Sermon
You're Worth It!

Brad explores the first principle...its origin, its history and how it applies to us today.

Brad Shreve
July 31st Sermon
Self-Care is Our Primary Job on Earth!

Whereas we can never repay the Creation for the unspeakable gift of our existence, we can and must respond with every pore of our organism. Self-care furnishes the litmus test for being an awakened and responsible human being. Tom Owen-Towle will address the six zones of his self-care regimen: mind, body, spirit, heart, soul, and conscience. This sermon will be based upon Owen-Towle’s latest book entitled SELF: Caring for Our Best Gift. Copies will be available for purchase as well as others of his books.

In this season of transitions, if you have a pastoral concern,
or know of someone in need, the following help is available:

In July and the first two weeks of August, contact Teri Masters at at (310) 634-7617.

From August 1st on, Reverend Stephen Furrer,
our new Interim Minister, will be here to help.

Is Pastoral Care Your Ministry?

The Pastoral Care Team will provide a caring presence, careful listening, and spiritual and emotional support to Pacific Unitarian Church members and friends who are facing life's challenges and/or who are alone. The Pastoral Care Team members work together to create an atmosphere of hope for those in the PUC community who are experiencing times of challenge, transition,
or crisis.

There are many levels of participation in the Pastoral Care Team. You might want to make calls or visits to those in need at home, or in the hospital or a nursing facility. Maybe you could make a post surgery meal for a member. You could write a note of encouragement to someone who is ill or is facing a challenge, or provide a ride to a doctor’s appointment.

If you are interested in spreading the love, please call Pastoral Care Team leader Teri Masters at (310) 634-7617 or email to revtmasters@gmail.com.

The PUC community is sad to be saying farewell to some of our members who are moving out of the area soon.  All of them have been active participants in the life of our church, have contributed much and will be greatly missed.  We wish them the best!

The ones we know who are moving are: Clay and Nuna Bosler; Elizabeth and Brian Drake, and Allison and Connor; Yoko Kelly, David Kane and Trenton and Max; and Missy Rogers.  Hopefully there aren’t any more of you out there who have personal or professional reasons that will take you away from us!

PUC artist Sue Cutler is again showing paintings in the hall. All are for sale. 20% of the salesprices will be donated to the church. Beautify your home at the same time you support your church and make Sue happy!
Remember to mark your calendars to come hear LA Kitchen founder, Robert Egger, speak after service on July 31st during brunch. Grab your lunch and head into the hall to find a table.
And remember to sign up for our trip to get a tour and volunteer at LA Kitchen on Saturday Aug 20th, leaving PUC parking lot at 8am. Space is limited, so sign up NOW.
Check out LA Kitchen’s feature on The Chew TV show.
You can meet us there at about 9:15am:

        Dinners With UUs
          (otherwise known as party time!)

Dinners With UUs is a favorite way for new and long time members to connect.  In the past we have held pot-luck dinners in the homes of members every other month.  Depending on the number the host can accommodate there are usually 8-10 guests, each bringing something to share.  Some hosts are equipped to handle kids, others aren’t.  We try to balance the offerings so that all our members will be able to enjoy these events.

Our first dinner will be hosted by Rachel Bruhnke, on Saturday, August 27th at 6 PM.  She has a lovely vegetable garden ( which we can enjoy) and lots of space so 20 members including kids are welcome.  We will have a sign-up sheet available at the Welcome Table on the patio. Look for Judy Shaffer, Joyce Block Miller or Betty Saunders if you have any questions.

A Small Favor For Our RE Program

At the end of the month our kids will be making rain sticks with a little help from you.  Please bring in your used paper towel rolls (preferred) and your used toilet paper rolls on Sundays between now and July 31st. You may place them in the marked bag on the bench just outside the PUC office. This simple step is a great way to help support our kids this summer.

“It takes a long time to become young.”
Pablo Picasso

Years ago, people told each other stories about where the Earth came from and how people, animals, and plants came to be. Some of these beautiful stories help us connect with the mysteries of the universe. For the first few weeks we delve into this story from the Navajo Nation about how Snail Girl brought fresh water to the world.

July 24:  Water Music
Our kids spend a magical morning in the gazebo, as the Peninsula String Trio performs music inspired by water.

July 31: Dirty Water/Clean Water
Our teens help teach about water scarcity and human needs.

August 7: Water for Wild Things
Revisiting our water mural, the kids talk about how animals use wild water, and how we keep our rivers clean and safe for animals and people.
