May 8th Sermon
IN PRAISE OF THE MOTHER

Today is Mother’s Day, a complicated holiday, invoking pain as well as joy, and deserving of much more attention than a Hallmark Card can provide. James will try.

Reverend James Ford
May 15th Sermon
Soar with the Hawks

Did you know that our atmosphere, the incredible thing that we breathe, is estimated to weigh five quadrillion tons? We will explore a meditation on the amazing element of air, that which takes us from our first gasp to our last breath - the very breath of life itself.

So Close We Can Taste It!

The final pledges are still rolling in. As of this writing, our three week campaign raised just over $229,000, or 95.5% of the way toward our goal. This includes the anonymous gift from a very generous member for $25,000. The Trustees and the Pledge Team would like to acknowledge all the pledges and thank you for the degree to which you stretched your giving.  The funds will make a difference.

The difference between our current total and our goal of $240,000 comes to just $100 per member.  Given this difference, Pledge Team Chair Tara Unverzagt added an additional $1000 to her pledge and invites those of you who envision fully funded programs, maintenance, and support staff to join her.  Please consider following Tara’s lead and pledging an additional a few percentage points more for the new fiscal year. Simply fill out a second pledge card in the office or go to the pledge page on the PUC website.

Thank you all again for your enthusiasm and generosity throughout this campaign.  Serving as your pledge team has been our honor.

With gratitude,

Your 2016/2017 Pledge Team

We are renting a truck again, so those with mobility issues can join in the fun.

To come along and have some fun, please call either Brad Shreve or Maurice Chevalier.  You can also email us at sosl@pacificunitarian.org.  Our phone numbers are in the church directory.

PUC is a Friend of the LA River!

On Saturday, April 30, PUC members joined thousands of other volunteers for the annual Friends of the LA River (FOLAR) Great LA River Cleanup: La Gran Limpieza.   On Saturday, the last of three weekend events, 1,500 volunteers  picked up an estimated 12 tons of trash!  Over the entire month-long event, 9,000 volunteers came out and proved that Angelenos love their River, collecting 70 tons of trash. This is the largest urban river clean up in America.

Not only was this an important community environmental and cultural event, but a great time was had by all!  Lora Childers says it was a “REALLY fun way to spend a morning … and such a family friendly activity.”  Thanks to everyone who made PUC’s participation possible!

RE Holds a Special Remembering Circle
Memorial Day Weekend
Sunday, May 29
After the Children Are Sung Out of the Service
RE Classrooms

The Sunday of this Memorial Day weekend, all the children in RE will be together for a Remembering Circle led by member and former parent-child educator Tracy Blender.  They will talk about people who have passed, including PUC’s recent administrator, Craig Block, who was known to many of the children and who passed in December. The focus of the holiday, those who die in service to their community and country, will be discussed. Together they will talk about why this happens and what it might mean. If your child thinks he or she might like to talk about the passing of special people, he or she is invited to bring a photograph.  All the children will have an opportunity to talk about their own now-gone people, if they choose. Parents & grandparents are invited to attend. Of course, children who may be very sensitive about this topic are always welcome in child care during the activity.  Please let RE chair Michele Bethune know that morning and she will explain how.
